Swiftkey is an extremely popular third-party keyboard for Android with over a million downloads from the Google Play store.

The basis for Swiftkey is to replace the standard Android keyboard with a much quicker typing experience via personalized predictions and auto correct that Swiftkey claims are much faster then the default keyboards.

The keyboard also features Swiftkey Flow, similar to the popular keyboard Swype, this allows you to spell a word by gliding from letter to letter without your finger leaving the keyboard.

Swiftkey recently made two announcements, the first being that it will soon have a iOS 8 version of the keyboard finally bringing SwiftKey to the Iphone, with iOS 8 being the first time Apple has allowed third party keyboards to be allowed.

The second announcement was that SwiftKey will now be free on Android, following the ever popular 'freemium' price model, selling extra features and themes inside the free app.

This announcement is great news for SwiftKey and the Android user base as a whole, providing all Android users a free alternative to the sometimes clunky keyboard built into android, or worse the keyboards forced onto users by Samsung Touchwiz and alike.

The announcement does raise the question as to why Swype is currently still selling for £2.42 on the Google Play Store when its main competitor is now free, but time will tell if this will change or not.

Anyone looking for a new keyboard experience on Android, head over to the Google Play store now for your free SwiftKey app.
