Sony's PlayStation Vue, an internet television service that is available on the PlayStation 3 and 4, along with the iPad, iPhone, Amazon Fire TV, and Google Chromecast, is now available nationwide across the U.S. It is also worth pointing out that the service is not available on the PlayStation TV.
On the PlayStation blog, Eric Lempel announced that the PlayStation Vue is now available in “over 203 newly launched markets” allowing users to watch networks such as AMC, ESPN, Comedy Central, and Cartoon Network, among other television stations.
The PlayStation Vue offers a free seven-day trial, after which potential buyers have three options going forward:
- Access Slim: 55+ channels, including live cable TV, movies, and sports channels for $29.99 per month.
- Core Slim: 70+ channels, including all the channels from Access Slim with the addition of national and regional sports networks for $34.99 per month.
- Elite Slim: 100+ channels, featuring all the channels from Core Slim with the addition of more top movie and entertainment channels for $44.99 per month.
Lempel also notes that with an “Internet connection and a PlayStation Vue TV-connected device, there are no hidden fees or long-term contracts for PlayStation Vue.”
For now, the Slim plans are only available in the newly launched markets. For those currently paying for a ‘Standard multi-channel plan’ they will have all the content that the Slim plans receive, save for video-on-demand (VOD)-only content that ABC, FOX, and NBC will provide. What this means is that users will be able to access ‘top’ content, such as primetime shows across the aforementioned networks, with most ‘on-demand’ content available within 24 hours of the original airdate. Users will also have to subscribe to channels such as Showtime at an additional fee while also subscribing to Vue in order to have access to both.
There are also some ‘unique’ features for those utilizing PlayStation Vue, such as their ‘Cloud’ DVR, which allows users to “record hundreds of shows at once and store thousands of hours of content.” These features may help users decide if it is something you would want over a traditional television subscription or another cord cutting option such as Netflix. Quick Take:
For now, the PlayStation Vue is only available in the United States. Lempel stated that he is 'excited' to share more information about the Vue in the future, so hopefully other countries will be able to have access to the Vue in the future. It is definitely an interesting service, so it would be a shame if it were only confined to the U.S.
