Nvidia has announced that it will be adding the GeForce GTX 1060 to the Pascal family of gaming GUIs.

In a press release on the Nvidia website, the Geforce GTX 1060 features a 1,280 CUDA cores, 6GB of GDDR5 memory running at 8Gbps and a boost clock of 1.7GHz. Nvidia also boasts that the card can be overclocked to 2GHz for further performance.

The GTX 1060 also supports Nvidia VRWorks, which is a software development kit that "allows developers to intertwine what users see, hear and touch with the physical behavior of the environment" according to the press release. Nvidia VRWorks includes Simultaneous Multi-Projection Technology, which allows the GTX 1060 to seamlessly project an image with a 3x VR graphics performance improvement over previous generations of GPUs - making the GTX 1060 tailor made for VR gaming.

Nvidia also gave price and release details for the GTX 1060. At $249, with a special "Founders Edition" board built by Nvidia for $299 that is only available at Nvidias website.  The Founders Edition uses a dual-FETs power supply to improve power efficiency, along with a low impedance power delivery network and custom voltage regulators and a die-cast aluminum body and thermal solution to provide longevity to the board.

The performance target for the GTX 1060, according to Nvidia is to match that of the GTX 980. While at this time there are no benchmarks out, that would make it an impressive and powerful card for its cost on the lower end. It would make it cost more than the AMD 480, but if they are accurate on their level of performance, give it a notable boost in power over AMD's card which is more comparable to the GTX 970 in benchmarks. Nvidia makes the claim that at stock clock speeds the GTX 1060 is 15% faster and 75 percent more power efficient, although these claims have not been tested by third parties. It's also not known which version of the AMD 480 they were testing against, as the 4GB version has a slower memory bandwidth speed.

Worth noting is that Nvidia appears to have addressed some of the issues found with the card's predecessor, the GTX 960. The 960 was limited due to having only 2 GB of VRAM and a slow memory speed. The GTX 1060 instead has a larger 6 GB of RAM, which runs at 8Gbps putting it in the modern speed era and not running into a memory bottleneck that can happen with lower amounts of RAM on cards with newer titles.

PC players can purchase the card on July 19th for all partnered Nvidia GeForce partners, including ASUS, Galaxy, MSI and EVGA. The GTX 1060 also supports Ansel Technology, which is  a game capture tool that allows players to manipulate the camera as they see fit, capturing a 360-degree stereo photospheres for viewing with a VR Headset. Some of the games listed to include this technology include Mirrors Edge: Catalyst and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Other Ansel-related games include Lawbreakers, Tom Clancy's The Division, and No Mans Sky
