Admist all of the craziness and backlash Facebook has received about making people split their time between two of their apps (and here's my opinion on it) someone is paying attention. If seems that an alpha build of Google Hangouts was shown off on Caschys Blog showing off a 'chat heads' style for it.
Codenamed "UltraViolet" this version shows off the chat heads that can be moved all over the place on the screen with Hangouts in stroll.
Will this ever actually make it to market, no one really knows. One thing is for show, the floating style looks to be integrated into everything soon enough.
