Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Edition Box Review

How important are Dragons to a game of Dungeons & Dragons? Well, that may be a silly question, as they're right there in the name. But incorporating a full-grown, ready-to-eat-you dragon in your D&D campaign is often harder to pull off then you might expect. They're massively deadly, keenly aware of their surroundings, and abnormally smart. But with the release of the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition sourcebook Fizban's Treasury of Dragons (which we reviewed right here back in 2021), a whole new approach to (and many different versions of) the dragon was introduced. As they have with other sourcebooks, WizKids has just created a new line of miniatures based on Fizban's Treasury of Dragons.

While you can buy the larger dragons separately, and open up blind-boxes hoping to score a rare mini, WizKids also went all-out and created the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box, which collects all miniatures - as well as special bonus minis not included in the blind-boxes. WizKids was kind enough to send us one of these Collector's Boxes for review, and we've got lots of pictures for you below, as well as some of our thoughts. Fly on!

What are the common miniatures in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box Like?

Opening blind boxes will likely net you plenty of these common tier minis, but even though they're common, there are a lot of really exciting pulls to be had here. I really love the look of both the Green Guard Drake and the Deep Dragon Wyrmling, and the Blue Dragon Wyrmling is the most classically-posed Dragon in the bunch. A few dragon-centric humanoids are in here too (the set isn't just limited to dragons) adding nice variety to the common list.

What are the uncommon miniatures in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box Like?

The Uncommon miniatures from  Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box is where the set begins to really get creative with their offerings. This is, essentially, where we really start to get into the action, with some pretty incredible minis like the Hydroloth, Black Dragon Wyrmling, and the cat-like Liondrake.

I really like the look of the Dragonborn miniatures in this set, and could see myself building an entire character around the tankard-carrying Emerald Dragonborn. The batch of Uncommon miniatures also sees a full suite of Draconic villains to pit against your heroes.

What are the Rare miniatures in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box Like?

The Rare miniatures from the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box are truly the show-stoppers of the set. From Fizban himself, looking snazzy in green, to representations of Dragonborn characters of several notable Draconic demi-gods, including Tiamat and Bahamut, the rares in this set do not disappoint. But where they really shine are in the larger minis, like the absolutely shocking Hoard Mimic, which looks like a pile of gold bursting forth to eat you, and the translucent purple Young Amethyst Dragon. One of my favorite details is on the Young Sapphire Dragon, who has small white stars etched on its hide.

What are the promotional miniatures included in the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box?

Along with the miniatures available in blind boxes, the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box also includes eight promotional miniatures. These include two versions of wyrmlings for the Amethyst, Crystal, Moonstone, and Topaz dragons, and they each look really sharp and well-designed on the tabletop.

What are the Premium Sets included in the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box?

As if all of that wasn't enough, also included in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box are two premium dragon miniatures that have to be seen to be believed. First, there's the Dracohydra. Taking inspiration from Tiamat herself, the Dracohydra is a multi-headed monstrosity  who sports six heads of different colors, and is modeled to soar above the action on a plastic stand. With a huge wing spread, the Dracohydra is a monumental presence on the tabletop.

And then there's the Elder Brain Dragon. This is truly one of the creepiest dragon minis I've ever seen. Designed to look like a dragon being overtaken and controlled by an Elder Brain, this miniature is a fearful presence. There's even a thin plastic casing over the brain itself, which can be removed if you like the look of it better that way. There's not much more to say about how cool this mini is, just take a look...

What Are Our Final Thoughts on the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box?

This is an absolutely thrilling line of miniatures from WizKids. Each of the larger models are expertly crafted and look like they were custom-designed by a skilled artisan. While some of the features and details on the smaller models (especially the Kobolds) are a little rough, anything equal to or larger than a humanoid size is really impressive. And the set piece models, the Dracohydra, Hoard Mimic, Elder Brain Dragon, and some of the Young Dragons, look so good on the table I'm going to shoehorn them into my campaign whether they fit or not. As a set, this is really well done. But this collector's box isn't for everyone, as it has an extremely high price tag. If you want the box with all the contents you see here, it's MSRP for $787.49! But almost all of these minis can be found through blind boxes or sold separately, so don't despair if that price tag seems out of the realms of possibility.

Should I buy the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box?

Should you buy the Fizban's Treasury of Dragons Collector's Box? That depends entirely upon your means. With a price tag of $787, this is obviously not meant for the mass market, and is meant to be a huge investment. The packaging is gorgeous, as it comes in a bold pink and turquoise box marked with dragon scales all around it. This is, effectively, a luxury good, and should be treated as such. But if you're interested in some of the minis you see here, I think the entire line is strong enough to support buying a few blind boxes and hoping you pull that hoard mimic.
