Destinies Expansions

Destinies is a narrative adventure board game by Lucky Duck Games. We reviewed the Core Set, and enjoyed it so much, we then worked through the three available expansions for it. In this spoiler-free article, we’ll discuss each in turn, what the expansions contain, and what they add.

Destinie Bound By Fate.

Bound by Fate

Bound by Fate is a four-player expansion to Destinies. It adds all the components for a fourth player to let players play in two teams in a 2v2 game. The expansion adds several new heroes, which double up with those from the Core Set. When players select their characters, both players in the team have the same character quests, just with different character names. For example the Noble from the core set and the Henchman from the Bound by Fate expansion work as a team.

Both players in the team are working to complete the same quest, and during play, can summon the other team member to their map tile to help them with tests, where both players can add their scores together for better chances at completing tasks.

The scenarios are the same, for Bound by Fate as the regular three-player games, so there won’t be any surprises for players who’ve played through them before, but it does play slightly differently and add a new dynamic.

Bound by Fate works with the Destines Core Set, as well as Sea of Sand and Myth and Folklore.

Destinies Sea of Sand.

Sea of Sand

Destinies Sea of Sand is a mini-campaign expansion to the main game. It introduces new map tiles, miniatures, equipment, and characters in a three-part campaign set on the shores of North Africa.

Play-wise, Sea of Sand is much the same as the Destinies Core Set, but it introduces new mechanics with dungeons and mazes, where you can find the solutions through investigation, or guess your way through. There’s also a travel mechanic, with several mini-maps to represent the vast areas of the desert that works incredibly well and the scenarios themselves are thematic and immersive.

The scenarios in Sea of Sand feel a lot more complicated than the original set, and you may have to take a lot more notes with lots of clues to remember, and multipart destinies to work through. With the multipart destinies, it’s not always as simple as simply asking someone about your destiny to find the next step, and you need to work a lot more out for yourself.

If you enjoyed the original Destinies campaign, then this is more of the same, if a little more complex. We would have liked a longer campaign out of the set, the new miniatures, map tiles, and equipment feel underused in a three-part campaign, but it’s still an enjoyable challenge, and can still be played again solo, or with the 2v2 expansion.

Destinies Myth and Folklore.

Myth and Folklore

Destinies Myth and Folklore is a mini-campaign expansion to the main game. It introduces new map tiles, miniatures, equipment, and characters in a three-part campaign set in a more mythical fantasy setting.

Myth and Folklore plays the same as the Destinies Core Set, but the scenarios in have, as the name suggests, a more folklorish theme with some crazy challenges and interactions. These were our favorite scenarios out of all the Destinies scenarios and they have a really nice flow to them. A couple of interactions really stand out in theme and feel and capture the wispy nature of medieval folklore.

If you enjoyed the original Destinies campaign, then this is more of the same, just a little wilder. We would have liked a longer campaign out of the set, as with Sea of Sand, the new miniatures, map tiles, and equipment feel underused in a three-part campaign, but it’s still an enjoyable challenge, and can still be played again solo, or with the 2v2 expansion.
