World of Warcraft fans and lovers of board game madness, the time has come. The official Wrath of the Lich King board game is now available.
As we have reported before, Asmodee Publishing and developer Z-Man Games have officially partnered with Blizzard Entertainment to work on this official adaptation of one of WoW's most iconic villains and story expansions. Using the co-op gameplay found in Z-Man's Pandemic series, the game hopes to make the war against the titular Lich King as exciting as possible.
The Wrath of the Lich King board game invites players to travel to Northrend within the world of Azeroth as one of seven legendary World of Warcraft heroes in a journey to vanquish the Scourge and their corrupted leader, the Lich King. To reach him, heroes must use their unique abilities to fight the undead and complete dangerous quests, weakening the Lich King’s power before a climactic face-off with Arthas. Master Hero Cards and use Quest rewards wisely to stand a chance at winning - the Scourge are mighty, and they are many.
Of course, while the game borrows the core systems of the contagion survival experience that is Pandemic, this is a co-op action experience set in the World of Warcraft universe. Z-Man's Marketing Manager, Beth Erikson stated, "We wanted this game to be truly heroic and that meant going all out on new art, sculpted figures, new game challenges, and new character abilities that all fit together to feel like both a Pandemic and a World of Warcraft game."
The Wrath of the Lich King board game will include the following:
- The game board featuring the iconic Northrend locations and structures pulled straight from the games with an eye for detail.
- World of Warcraft characters with detailed and sculpted plastic figures, including named characters from the Hoard and the Alliance respectively like Thrall, and Sylvanas
- Quest Cards that are awarded to players when they undertake additional challenges like battling monstrous entities, destroying evil relics, and more.
- Hero cards that help players get an edge over their enemies such as equipment for more attack power during combat, special mounts that allow players to move more spaces on their turn, healing potions to restore hit points, and much more.
The Wrath of the Lich King board game is currently available at participating Target outlets and will be sold at the retail price of $59.99.
