Games Workshop has done a solid job releasing new material for their latest edition of Warhammer 40,000. Several of these codices have already been released, covering the Drukhari and the more iconic army factions like the Adeptus Astartes and the Death Guard. But what else is coming? How long will fans have to wait? Good news, we have a road map.
According to a post on the Warhammer Community website, Games Workshop has got the release dates for future codices laid out. August of 2021 will see the release of updated rules and units for the Grey Knights and the Thousand Sons. September will see the full release of the Orks new codex. This is meant to fully bring out the potential of the newest units added by the Ork Beast Snaggas Army Set which was released earlier this July.
November will be graced by the latest version of the most zealous slayers of xenos scum across the entire Imperium: the Black Templars. In addition to brand new rules and tactics, this army will be receiving new units, including the one shown in previews as the Emperor's Champion. Finally, the roadmap does tease new codices for both xenos and Imperium armies set to release in December of 2021. As to which armies these will be is anyone's guess.
For my two cents on these December codices, I have some working theories. It most likely won't be the Eldar. They haven't seen any major updates in terms of units or major revisions for years, and it's a trend that shows no signs of stopping. The same goes for the Tau and the Tyranids. Given the ongoing support the Necron units have received as well as their ongoing popularity in recent Warhammer 40,000 novels, there's a good chance they'll be the next xenos army to receive an updated codex. On the other side of the coin, it's difficult to tell which Imperium army will be getting some new rules near the end of 2021. There's a good chance it might be the Sisters of Battle, given the new units teased alongside the Beast Snagga Orks at this year's Warhammer Fest, but there's always a chance for a surprise.
