Last August, Fantasy Flight Games announced Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game. It was a brief trailer, a small footnote in their GenCon presentation at the time alongside other projects they were promoting at the time. Now, the developer has released more details about their tabletop take on a galaxy far far away.

Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game Gameplay

According to an official press release by Asmodee Publishing, Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game will be a competitive experience. Each match will be between two players. One plays as the Rebel Alliance. The other plays as the Galactic Empire. Both players start with a deck of ten cards, which they play to generate resources and buy increasingly better cards from a supply. You can also spend those resources to destroy certain cards in the supply so your opponent can't buy them.

Where Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game differs from other deckbuilders is how you win the game. Each player starts the game with three bases, represented by various planets in the Star Wars universe like Mon Cala or Coruscant. If you lose all three of your bases, you lose. To defend these bases, you can purchase capital ships and position them at these bases, providing additional defense. In addition, whenever you lose a base, you can choose a replacement from the deck. This is important since bases in the game provide passive gameplay bonuses.

I wonder how many bothans the empire can kill in a single match.

Finally, Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game also has a mechanic around The Force. The universal energy that surrounds and penetrates all living things is represented by a Balance of the Force track. As certain cards are played, the track will be between Neutral, Light Side, and Dark Side. If The Force is with you, you will get certain gameplay benefits like extra resources. A match always starts with The Force being with the Rebels, but the Empire always goes first.

Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game will coming in March 2023. It is available for pre-order on Fantasy Flight's website or your local game store right now.
