While the scheduled release and preview of Amonkhet, the next Magic: The Gathering set from Wizards of the Coast, is still over a month out, this weekend has already seen a potential first look at the mechanics and cards that players can expect to see. This reddit thread discusses a card bearing the Amonkhet set symbol that was allegedly found in a booster pack of Modern Masters 2017, which was released on March 17, 2017.

The card, seen below, bears a layout similar in structure to the flip cards of Kamigawa, or split cards from Invasion and various other Magic: The Gathering sets; it is in essence two separate cards, each with their own casting cost and abilities, sharing one card. The two parts of the card are as follows (translation credit goes to reddit user kapectas):

  • Dusk: Sorcery, casting cost of two generic and two white mana. Destroy all creatures with power greater or equal to 3.
  • Dawn: Sorcery, casting cost of three generic and two white mana. Consequence - Cast this spell only from your graveyard, then exile it. Return all creature cards with power less than or equal to 2 from your graveyard to your hand.

Since the first thread detailing this card went live yesterday, multiple people have since come forward and posted their own copies of Dusk // Dawn that they've found; while this doesn't completely verify the legitimacy of this card, it does add more weight to claims that it is real. Until more cards from Amonkhet are revealed, or Wizards of the Coast comments on the legitimacy of Dusk // Dawn, TechRaptor is treating it's existence as unconfirmed.

Amonkhet is slated for release on April 28, 2017. Stay tuned to TechRaptor for more information on Amonkhet and all things Magic: The Gathering.

Quick Take

I played during the Kamigawa block, and even the ill-received flip cards had better aesthetics than this. It's an interesting re-imagining of the Flashback mechanic, but my God is it hideous to look at. Hopefully this doesn't end up as just another gimmicky set mechanic, but gets some serious design space from Wizards of the Coast.
