A beloved board game from 2002 is getting a brand new edition. Recently, Awaken Realms and Ravensburger launched a crowdfunding campaign for Puerto Rico Special Edition: a modern streamlined remake of the original. The project was fully funded three minutes after going live on Gamefound.
The Puerto Rico Special Edition Gamefound Campaign
According to its Gamefound campaign page, Puerto Rico Special Edition is an improved definitive release of the original euro game. It will feature top notch components, improved layout, vast gameplay improvements, and contain all previous expansions.
The original 2002 release of Puerto Rico is beloved in the tabletop community. It was designed by Andreas Seyfarth and had players competing as independent Puerto Rican farmers, trying to amass wealth and privilege.
Puerto Rico Special Edition will retain this beloved core gameplay loop, just with some modern polish. Design has been tweaked and mechanics have been streamlined, all to make setup and gameplay smoother. In addition, the Special Edition will contain a brand new expansion designed by Seyfarth.
There are several pledge levels for Puerto Rico Special Edition. They are as follows:
- Merchant's Pledge for $146: A copy of Puerto Rico Special Edition. It includes a high-quality neoprene mat, and acrylic tiles.
- Standard Edition for $59: A "standard" version of Puerto Rico Special Edition. It contains standard game components. Wooden workers and crates, cardboard coin and ship pieces, etc..
- Puerto Rico 1897 Special Edition for $95: A copy of the game with deluxe components (workers, coins, ships, etc.)
- Landscape Pledge for $195: Everything in the Merchant's Pledge level plus a 3D Terrain Pack.
- Grande Pledge for $279: Everything in the Landscape Pledge level, plus acrylic tiles, art book, a copy of San Juan: The Card Game, and a set of card sleeves.
New stretch goals will be revealed for Puerto Rico Special Edition every two days. At time of writing, one of those stretch goals has been revealed: a new expansion containing achievement cards .All stretch goals are included at all pledge levels.
So far, the Gamefound campaign for Puerto Rico Special Edition has raised $801,842, completely overtaking its initial funding goal of $50,000. The campaign concludes September 22.
