In an unusual, unprecedented move, Wizards of the Coast has announced that their recent-most Magic: The Gathering reprint set, Eternal Masters, will be receiving a "modest" reprint for the holiday season.

Originally released on June 10, 2016, Eternal Masters consisted of 249 reprints of cards legal in Vintage, Legacy, and Commander/EDH, and was primarily targeted towards those formats. Criticized for its high MSRP, low expected value in packs, and conflicting set design, Eternal Masters was considered by many to be a result of Wizards of the Coast falling to listen to customer feedback - our readers can read more about the failings of Wizards of the Coast in this set in our stand-alone article, Eternal Masters: Lessons in Product Design.

Unlike the original print run, local game stores will not be restricted to Eternal Masters product by store level, and will not have to sign up to receive product through Wizards Event Reporter - instead, stores in the United States and Canada can contact their distributors, which includes Wizards Direct Sales.

There is no word in the announcement on exact numbers for the reprint run, other than it will be "small" and "modest" so as to not interfere with Kaladesh and the upcoming Aether Revolt, nor is there any information on how long the reprint will run for. Pre-orders for Eternal Masters product will begin immediately.

Quick Take

This announcement from Wizards of the Coast is surprising as prior reprint sets Modern Masters and Modern Masters 2015 did not receive secondary print runs. The digital client, Magic: The Gathering Online, frequently receives "flashback" draft events, so it may be possible that we'll see something similar done with real word product - or at least, with the limited sets.
