Asmodee is teaming up with Unexpected Games to release the first board game from the new studio. The Initiative is a narrative experience putting players in the shoes of 90's teenagers who have discovered a mysterious board game call The Key. Players must not only play The Key but must also guide their characters through pivotal moments in their lives. It's a bit like Jumanji if Jumanji was also a coming-of-age story.
A Combination of Comic and Board Game
Not only is The Initiative a board game, but it's also an interactive story. Each new mission in the campaign starts when the players read a chapter from an included comic book, which is where the coming-of-age element comes in. The story is a mystery that continued to unfold in each chapter, even if the players don't win that round, combining elements of code-breaking and narrative to create a true story-driven experience.
If you're a fan of solving mysteries, breaking codes, or deep and interesting storylines, then you'll probably end up in love with The Initiative.
The Initiative Has A Tabletop Pedigree
The mind behind The Initiative is none other than Corey Konieczka, the mind behind games like Eldritch Horror (2013), and the latest incarnation of Twilight Imperium. Having left his position at Fantasy Flight last year, Konieczka is now heading up Unexpected Games. The Initiative also happens to be a game very close to his heart, having started life as a personal project:
“This game started as a passion project, I’ve been crafting this idea for years, and I can’t wait for people to experience it for themselves.”
The Initiative is expected to be in stores during the spring of 2021 and you can learn more at Unexpected Games' website.
