Games Workshop has released new changes coming to the Imperial Guard. The developers of the grimdark sci-fi universe of Warhammer 40k have gotten into a routine of giving their players a glimpse at changes for the game's various armies. This usually happens around the release of a new codex. This has happened before with the iconic Space Marines, the monstrous Tyranids, and the ruthless Chaos Daemons. Now with their newest battlebox available for preorder, the developers are providing a sneak peek of the new Imperial Guard codex.

The new Imperial Guard codex

The preview of the Imperial Guard codex came from an official Warhammer-Community post. The post mostly talks about new regimental doctrines, which buff infantry units. This is important since Imperial Guard is unique in Warhammer 40k for focusing on large numbers of infantry soldiers and tanks rather than gigantic war machines or enhanced super soldiers. The new Born Soldiers doctrine fits into this playstyle, emphasizing pure manpower over artillery. Alternatively, if you need more firepower to take down the enemies of the Imperium, there is the Armoured Superiority doctrine, which greatly help with securing objectives.

This offers a lot of flexibility for artillery.

Finally, the Imperial Guard codex allows players to mix and match iconic characters and their units together. The lore of the Imperial Guard is packed with named units, usually Commissars, that have lead their units to battle against impossible odds. This does require a large number of detachments, but this does mean the new codex will allow you to combine the likes of Gaunt's Ghosts and Ursula Creed's battalion and more together. As for how that will work in game terms, Games Workshop was silent. Although, it is telling that one of the Imperial Guard's most iconic characters, the red-eyed Commissar Yarrick, might be dead.

The new Imperial Guard codex is available as part of the Cadia Stands battlebox, which is available for pre-order now.
