The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm has been announced. This is Free League Publishing's very first major expansion for their beloved TTRPG set in JRR Tolkien's world of Middle-earth after a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, a successful retail release, and a digital-only solo mode,

What is in The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm?

According to an official press release by Free League Publishing, The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm will take players to the Lone-Lands of Eriador. This western land, set between the Misty Mountains and the Mountains of Lune, was once described as deserted but has now become a place of adventure. This is not only because of the discovery of Elves and Men, but the remnants of the Dunedain, the kings of Men that came over the Sea of Westernesse. It is also the land where The One Ring lies, and smoke has been seen in the land of Mordor once again.

The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm's book will contain three chapters containing the following:

  • Chapter 1 Fog Over Eriador: This is a worldbuilding chapter focusing on the regions that were once part of the kingdom of Arnor, specifically the city of Tharbad
  • Chapter 2 A Gathering Storm: This will provide Loremasters with narrative elements, new characters, and agendas. These elements include possible futures for the land of Eriador as well as looming threats in the background
  • Chapter 3 Landmarks: As the title implies, this chapter will include new sites of interest. These will include areas of historical importance from both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories as well as brand new ones.

Given how much research and care has gone into authentically portraying Middle-earth into this TTRPG, the appeal of The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm is quite apparent. Players having a chance to tell their story about what may be the start of the War of the Ring has a certain allure.

Whatever that is in the distance, it can't be good.
