Fantasy Flight Games has announced a new board game. The tabletop publisher has a rich history of board game releases throughout the years. These include original works like the sci-fi series Twilight Imperium as well as officially licensed titles like Arkham Horror, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. Their latest title has them returning to the ubiquitous world of Marvel superheroes with the title Marvel Dagger.
Fantasy Flight Games' Marvel Dagger details
According to the post on the official website, Marvel Dagger is a co-op board game experience. One to five players take on the role of a Marvel superhero as part of the new Defense Alliance for Global and Galactic Emergency Response program. As the name implies, you must work with your fellow teammates to stop various crises, building up enough power and resources to stop the ultimate threat. There will be twenty playable heroes in the game. Each of these heroes are split into pairs and are represented on one part of a double-sided character sheet. These pairings include the Peter Parker and Miles Morales incarnation of Spider-Man, both the Natasha and Yelena Black Widow, as well as Elektra and Daredevil.
As for the gameplay, Marvel Dagger emphasizes combos and synergies. There are two types of tokens in the game: Empowered and Primed. If a hero has an Empowered token, it will help them succeed in an attribute test (or dice roll). A Primed token helps that hero attack an enemy. This is important since both tokens are resources for various combo abilities the heroes have. Activating these combo abilities also advances a team-up track, which is used to activate more powerful abilities. Finally, there are six different Heroic Aspects which can provide different additional depth. For example. Aggression lets you deal more damage, while Determination lets you roll additional dice to overcome difficult challenges.
Finally, there is the nemesis, the final challenge of a game of Marvel Dagger. A nemesis has different abilities which can inconvenience the heroes. An example given is the God of Mischief, Loki, being able to cheat heroes out of Empowerment tokens with his Illusory Foes ability. In addition, the nemesis has their own signature minion. In Loki's case, it is Frost Giants. These abilities are tied to side missions called nemesis missions. If the heroes fail one of these missions, the nemesis becomes more powerful. Once three nemesis missions are complete, the final showdown begins.
Marvel Dagger will release on June 30. It is currently available for pre-order on Asmodee's website for an MSRP of $89.99.
