Fallout The Board Game Fantasy Flight

Fantasy Flight Games has announced Fallout: The Board Game, a tabletop adaptation of the post-apocalyptic nuclear future of the Fallout universe according to their website.

Fallout: The Board Game is largely based on the worlds of Bethesda's games Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and their respective DLC content. This particular tabletop game will not be featuring content from other Fallout titles such as Fallout 1Fallout 2Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout Tactics, or any of the other games from various publishers and genres. While both games have their fair share of protagonists, heroes, villains, and other major players, you will be taking on the role of an average Joe in the hellscape that is the remains of the United States after the Great War of 2077. Fallout has ties to tabletop gaming that date back to before the first game's release, when it was originally envisioned to license the GURPS system.

Players will progress through the game making decisions that will earn them loot, experience, or favor with one of the factions in play. As the game moves on, the factions will grow in influence on the game board. Ultimately, players will be trying to gain the most influence of anyone in the Wasteland.

Fallout The Board Game Hex Board
In Fantasy Flight Games' Fallout: The Board Game, players will move around a hex-based map of the world. The boards with pegs are used for tracking player information and statistics such as HP and Rads.

The game board itself will be comprised of several hexes, a feature that ought to make creating custom scenarios or homebrewed rules a bit simpler. Players will have a character cart, loot cards, and perks to juggle. The classic S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats will come into play with a simpler version of the mechanic: you're either proficient in one of the seven areas or you're not. You'll have to keep track of your HP and Rads (represented by the Red and Green pegs) on your character board, with HP generally moving downwards and Rads moving upwards. Should the HP and Rad pegs meet (either from your HP being depleted below your current Rads or your Rads raising above your current HP), you'll die.

There will be four scenarios included with Fallout: The Board Game: The Capital Wasteland & The Pitt from Fallout 3 and The Commonwealth and Far Harbor from Fallout 4. Each scenario will feature two opposing factions that players can choose to align with or fight against; for example, The Commonwealth Scenario will showcase The Railroad and The Institute duking it out. Although the contents of the scenarios are somewhat fixed, the game board itself and the cards you draw will be different every time.

As you progress through the game, you'll collect Influence Cards that either give you benefits with one of the two factions of the scenario or otherwise improve your character. Players will have a main quest to work their way through as well as a number of optional Side Quests that will be made available as the storyline of the game progresses. That's more or less all we have about the game as it stands right now; we're sure to hear more about the details of Fallout: The Board Game in the coming months.

Fantasy Flight Games aren't the only ones to develop a Fallout board game; Modiphius announced Fallout: Wasteland Warfare in late April 2017. Fallout: The Board Game will be available sometime in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Are you interested in a Fallout board game at all? Do you think that the Fallout The Board Game announced will be a good or interesting take on the license? Do you think that Shady Sands/New California Republic should be included in the scenarios? How do you like other products by the company? Let us know in the comments below!
