Hello, TechRaptor readers. As I’m sure you’re well aware by now, pre-orders for the new Warhammer 40,000 board game Deathwatch: Overkill went live today. Games Workshop stores currently have display copies available for people to drool over, including both the Deathwatch and Genestealer Cult models. This week’s copy of White Dwarf also has the rules for using the individual Deathwatch models in a normal Warhammer 40,000 game and a formation rulesheet for using the entire Deathwatch kill team as one unit. Next week’s White Dwarf will have the rules available for the Genestealer Cult models as well.

The board game will contain the following:

  • a Genestealer Primus, a Genestealer Magus and two Familiars
  • 2 Purestrain Genestealers, 4 Aberrants and 28 Genestealer Hybrids (12 Acolyte Hybrids of the 1st and 2nd generation and 16 Neophyte Hybrids of the 3rd and 4th generation);
  • a massive Genestealer Patriarch
  • 11 Deathwatch Space Marines, taken from ten different Chapters.
  • teleport homer and servo skull
  • 8 detailed double-sided board tiles
  • 6 dice
  • a range ruler
  • 48 page rulebook

Games Workshop recently uploaded a tutorial video over an hour long covering the mechanics of the game and how to play. Curious 40K fans managed to dig up the currently unlisted video from the Warhammer TV YouTube channel and giving players a sneak peek as the models themselves.

Deathwatch: Overkill is the newest part of a growing collection of board games released by Games Workshop, though this release is a bit different in that rules for using the models in regular Warhammer 40K games are available. This shows that the company is paying attention to its customer base and giving them the opportunity to do more with their beautiful new models aside from using them as simple proxies.

There has also been talk of potential Genestealer Cult and Deathwatch armies being available in the near future. Rather than full armies in their own right, these sub-factions would function more like Skitarii or Harlequins, acting as add-ons to already existing Tyranid and Imperial armies respectively. There is no detailed information on these future sub-factions, like a release date, but it doesn’t take a giant leap of imagination to see this coming to pass. Particularly given Games Workshop’s current trend of taking inspiration from past ideas and products for new releases.

Deathwatch: Overkill is currently available to pre-order today and will be released to your FLGS on March 5th for $165 USD. You can also purchase the game and the novel covering the events of the game for $192 USD.
