Nintendo's Bowser, a completely different person from Gary Bowser.

Gary Bowser, a Canadian hacker with no relation to the Nintendo villain or Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser, has been struck with a $10 million fine to settle Nintendo of America's lawsuit against him. This comes in addition to a fine of $4.5 million and up to ten years in jail

Gary Bowser, 51, was a part of Team Xecuter, one of the world's most "notorious video game piracy groups." This controversial team operates as a for-profit company is best known for selling modchips for the Nintendo Switch, which circumvent the device's security measures and allow users to play pirated games on the consoles, but their efforts go back to 2013 and included work on the original Xbox. Gary Bowser was arrested in the Dominican Republic and deported to the US under federal charges filed on October 2nd.

This final judgment in Nintendo of America's civil case was filed last night and is separate from the federal lawsuit that Gary Bowser pleaded guilty to early in November. In that federal plea agreement, Gary Bowser admitted that he had "developed, manufactured, marketed, and sold a variety of circumvention devices that allowed the enterprise's customers to play pirated versions of copyrighted video games, commonly referred to as 'ROMs'." Meanwhile, two of Gary's colleagues are still awaiting justice. One of them, 48-year old French national Max Louarn, was arrested in Canada and the US is seeking to extradite him. The other, 35-year old Yuanning Chen from Shenzhen, China, is still at large.
