4X games, or "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate" games, are a genre of strategy-based video games that are known for their deep strategy and complex gameplay. Players take control of every aspect of their civilization, including economic and technological development, and both military and diplomatic relations and decisions. It's because of this level of micromanagement that 4X games take an extended period of time to complete, and why some games are criticized for being tedious at times.
