Super Meat Boy Forever is the sequel to Super Meat Boy, and it started out being developed as a mobile game. Really, the idea for the game began immediately after the release for the first, when the developers were just messing around. It's an endless runner platformer that captures the feel of Super Meat Boy perfectly. I had a chance to play the game and chat some with developer Tommy Refenes.

If I had to define it, Super Meat Boy at its core, in terms of gameplay, comes down to two qualities: precise movement and challenging difficulty. Super Meat Boy certainly has both of those. I asked Tommy if the impossible but achievable feel was important when developing Forever, and he told me that it is definitely the Meat Boy pedigree and if that wasn't there, it would be like making a Metal Gear Solid game without stealth.

In Forever, the only thing you really don't have control over is horizontal movement. Meat Boy, or whatever character you are using, is always running forward. Well, almost always as you can manipulate him to turn around the other direction by running or jumping into a wall. You're still having to control when you go down or up, when you jump, and when to use a new dash/punch ability. This is a quick horizontal dash through the air that also serves to punch enemies out of the way in your path.

The best way for me to describe the game is that it feels like you're playing Super Meat Boy. All the sections are obviously designed to have you in constant movement, and you're still needing to be precise when you jump and where you need to land. You just don't have the ability to affect your momentum all that much.

Super Meat Boy Forever will feature 72 different stages. Each stage will have 100 "chunks" that will make that stage up randomly. So, each of those chunks has been hand-crafted, they are just then mashed together randomly from that pool. There will be difficulty levels to choose from in Forever, and all that does is change up the amount of difficult chunks you'll get in a randomly generated stage. Each chunk is a different difficulty level, and your chosen difficulty level will change how often you come across the more difficult ones.

Of course, Forever will feature a story throughout. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl are together and have a kid, Nugget. Dr. Fetus then comes along and kidnaps Nugget. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl go off to try to save him. Tommmy said he is having a lot of fun writing for the game, especially writing for Nugget, who he is hoping to make one annoying child for Dr. Fetus to deal with.

I enjoyed my short time with the game and am definitely looking forward to its release, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Super Meat Boy Forever is hoping to release sometime this year, but the developers said it is most likely going to be next year. It will be coming out on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch first with mobile versions on iOS and Android coming at a later date.
