Kao the Kangaroo

After over a decade and a half, video game developer and publisher Tate Multimedia is reviving Kao The Kangaroo, a series that has been dormant since 2005's Mystery of the Volcano. This time around, Kao is on a new adventure that puts him up against challenging enemies while exploring colorful and exotic locales filled with secrets. Kao The Kangaroo is a superbly designed platformer that's fun for the entire family, perfectly combining platforming level design with an accessible control scheme that makes this game perfect for any age. Check out the rest of our Kao The Kangaroo preview, and see why the Kao The Kangaroo reboot is a game to watch for in 2022.

Kao The Kangaroo Offers Vibrant, Brilliantly Designed Levels

Kao The Kangaroo In a Grassy Level

Any platformer is only as strong as its level design, and this is where Kao The Kangaroo excels. An easy-to-learn control scheme will have any player hopping and dashing across platforms in no time, collecting hundreds of coins, and investigating every nook and cranny for potential secrets. Whether you're a grown human who's nostalgic for 3D platformers of the 90s or you're looking for a game to play with the family, Kao The Kangaroo hits the perfect combination of fun, challenge, and accessibility.

The level available in the Kao The Kangaroo demo offered different elements that are sure to be familiar throughout the course of the game. There are elevation variations to make exploration a true 3D ordeal, as well as environmental hazards you'll need to watch out for, or else you'll suffer sinking slowly into a toxic swamp or drowning in a river. And of course, the enemies, which mostly comprise of semi-anthropomorphic animals who will punch, kick, and throw projectiles at you. Some will even spit fire, so you'll need to quickly learn Kao's movement commands to best dodge and defeat the enemies in each level. Kao The Kangaroo's gameplay is incredibly satisfying, with its levels serving as a microcosm sandbox for the player to get lost in at their leisure.

Time to Dust Off Your Platforming Skills

At its heart, Kao The Kangaroo is a classic platformer that'll have you hopping around every stage as you battle enemies and search for secrets. The overlying mechanics aren't particularly complicated, but the game succeeds in hitting that sweet satisfaction of nailing a series of jumps or finally reaching a new height you weren't entirely sure was possible. Kao is a kangaroo, after all, so don't be shy about jumping from place to place!

Secrets, Secrets, and More Secrets

Kao The Kangaroo Hanging from a Net

Every Kao The Kangaroo level includes secrets and collectibles for avid players to track down, from the hidden "K", "A", and "O" that you can find to the hidden mini heart pieces that'll increase Kao's total health bar. That's a big part of what makes the game such a broadly appealing game to so many demographics – it's challenging yet accessible, fun, and fast-paced, and you can choose to mainline mission objectives in each level or take your time tracking down every collectible. It's these little touches that make the world of Kao The Kangaroo one that's enjoyable to visit over and over again.

The Kao The Kangaroo release date will arrive later in 2022. If you're a fan of platforming adventures or want to revisit the Kao The Kangaroo series after all this time, you'll likely find it's a fun and charming experience that's perfect for solo sessions or family game nights. After all, you're never too old to hop around as an old kangaroo friend.
