After over a decade, the franchise JellyCar is returning with a brand-new installment: JellyCar Worlds. Designed to be like a flipbook brought to life, the game features a colorful world with an almost pencil-color quality to the backgrounds. During our hands-on JellyCar Worlds preview, I was able to play through the first few levels and get a feel of the inspired, toy-like nature.

For those who hadn't played a JellyCar game in the past, the concept is simple enough: you play as a car made of jelly. Your car can be squished and compressed to get around different obstacles, but so far as I can tell, the only way to lose a game is by completely falling off the edge. The levels are well designed to give each player a tutorial on what comes next, from the different powerups that are available to how to maneuver your jelly car around some of the more complex obstacles.

When it comes to difficulty and accessibility, developer Tim FitzRandolph mentioned the challenge in designing a game that could be enjoyed by everyone.

"Main levels are designed to be not too hard," FitzRandolph said. "However, every level has a secret exit. The secret exits are more challenging, so the player can self-select their difficulty. If you get all the secret exits, a door will open that'll bring you to a secret level."

JellyCar Worlds

Where other automotive games may focus on engine specs or arcade racing elements, JellyCar Worlds sets itself apart by being a puzzle platformer. Each world requires a different approach to complete, and the different powerups that are available to the player help your Jellycar move in strange ways. Grab a pump to inflate the car and grow huge, making it easier to climb onto higher platforms. Time your inflate ability just right, and you'll be able to launch the car into the air to reach new areas. Need to float up high? Drive into a balloon to be lifted off the ground. Each level will require different powerups to complete, preventing you from becoming complacent as you drive your JellyCar around this colorful world.

JellyCar Worlds players can also look forward to customization options for the different vehicles in the game. You'll be able to unlock different model types and then scribble on them to customize the colors and designs. Plus, one of the first things you'll notice in the game is all the sound effects are performed vocally. There will be an option to record your own sound effects into the game, meaning the JellyCar Worlds game you play could be unlike any other version out there. Whether you grew up with JellyCar or you're looking to jump in for the first time, there's plenty to look forward to in this fantastic adventure.

JellyCar Worlds will be coming to multiple platforms, and you can Wish List JellyCar Worlds on Steam right now. If you're interested in learning more about the JellyCar Worlds development, check out the Walaber Entertainment DevLog YouTube channel.
