Right after I saw the gorgeous looking The Pillars of the Earth, I had the opportunity to see some gameplay of Deadalic Entertainment's State of Mind, a futuristic adventure game set in Berlin in 2048.
Players take on the role of Richard Nolan, a journalist who writes about all the upcoming technology of the world. The catch is, he really hates technology. A lot. To the point that it is irrational. While they didn't go into it, I would have to assume the reason why Richard hates technology so much will be a pretty big part of the story.
The demo I saw started the game right at the beginning with Richard waking up after a series of harrowing images come across the screen. He's in a hosptial and a doctor is asking him all sorts of questions to see how Richard is doing mentally. Turns out he can't really remember his family at all, his wife and kids.
That's about all I saw while there, but the description of State of Mind's trailer on YouTube offers some insight:
But during Richard's upload, something goes wrong: he now exists in both places, the real world Berlin and as a second, incomplete version in virtual space. Now he tries everything to reunite with his virtual self and his family, but he soon realizes that his search for salvation affects not only him, but the future of all humanity...The upload that refers to is the upload of his consciousness into the virtual world, a digital Utopia. The world of State of Mind has all sorts of problems; it was described to me as think of all the big problems we have in the world today, just much worse. So, people have the choice to upload their consciousness and live there, worry free.
The tension of that virtual and the real world is where a lot of State of Mind's drama comes in. As that description notes, Richard has a problem with his uploading and ends up existing in the virtual and real world simultaneously. As he attempts to find his family, as well as what happens to him, players get the chance to explore the world.
State of Mind is releasing sometime this year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and Linux.
