While watching EA's press conference this last weekend, I couldn't help but wonder why another company hadn't already made a co-op "prison escape" videogame. When I sat down at Team17's booth to watch a gameplay presentation of The Escapists 2, however, I quickly learned that I was just misinformed, and the idea has already, and will continue to be explored in videogames for the foreseeable future.

I remember hearing about the first The Escapists, but I never really knew what it was about. I want to say I knew it was a prison-escape game, but for the life of me if you had asked me about the title a week ago I would've done nothing but draw a blank. However, from my understanding the original game was a solo affair only, where the player attempted to devise a plan to escape the semi-randomly generated prison that they find themselves in at the beginning of the game. I can't say with complete certainty what exactly has changed compared to the first game, but at least according to what I was told, some of the major new features would have to be the addition of co-op, female inmates, multiple floors for the prisons, and timed minigames for increasing your inmates stats.

Multiplayer is drop-in/drop-out, and players can continue online session locally or vice-versa. On Nintendo Switch, the title will support single joy-con controls for multiplayer. On every system, the game will support up to 4 player multiplayer both local and online. I made it a point to ask how much content the game should have compared to the previous game, and I was told that they were hoping to have more content for this title than the original The Escapists had at its launch.

The Escapists 2 will launch on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (including Mac and Linux?) when it launches later this year.
