Konami, in association with Cygames, have announced that Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner will be coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR as well as Steam. This remastered version of the PlayStation 2 title, named Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS, will be updated to take advantage of 4K outputs and will put players in the pilot seat in a whole new way, through full support for VR headsets.
This remaster is itself based on the previously released HD remaster which was bundled with the original Zone of the Enders in the ZOE HD Collection on PS3/Xbox360. The new version will feature visuals overhauled for 4K and additional post effects in keeping with the enhanced aesthetic, as well as fully remastered audio for surround sound. Zone of the Enders VR enhancements will allow the full game to played in VR, putting players directly in the cockpit of the game's mechs.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series Zone of the Enders, the two PlayStation 2 era games were fast-paced mech action games, played mostly from a third-person perspective. Players piloted agile mechs known as Runners, fighting other mechanized enemies in ranged and melee combat in open maps, scripted segments, and against formidable bosses. The games were the brain child of legendary developer and former Konami employee Hideo Kojima. The series only other game was a spin off on the Game Boy Advance in 2001 titled Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars. Chances of a revival seemed dim when the planned Zone of the Enders 3, known then as Enders Project, was cancelled in 2013 having only been announced a year before. The new edition of the second game may well give fans hope that there is life in the series yet.
Cygames and Konami, who are collaborating on the development of the game, will be allowing players to go hands-on for the first time at the upcoming Tokyo Games Show 2017. Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS will be on display at the Konami Digital Entertainment booth from the 21st to the 24th of September at the Makuhari Messe convention center, Tokyo. The publisher has given the game a tentative release window of Spring 2018.
How do you like the idea of Zone of the Enders VR? Would you like to see the series revived, or is it as good as gone without Hideo Kojima at the helm? Give us your thoughts down in the comments!
