Bomb Bots Arena developer Tiny Roar is partnering up with publisher Assemble Entertainment for a brand new sci-fi take on the Zelda formula. Xel is a 3D action-adventure game in which you'll collect gadgets, explore dungeons, and solve puzzles. It's coming next year.

What do we know about Xel?

In Xel, you'll play as Reid, a woman who washes up on the shores of the titular world. She doesn't remember anything about her past, so it's up to you to help her navigate this strange new place and learn more about its past. To help you do so, you'll have access to a sword and shield (we told you it was a Zelda-like) as well as plenty of strange gadgets and the ability to "jump through time and space". Here's the Xel announcement trailer to help you get a feel for the game's aesthetics.

The Xel press release uses the term "Zelda-like" liberally, so it's safe to assume if you love Nintendo's dungeon-delving series then you'll appreciate this too. Xel will boast a deep combat system with plenty of options for movement and attacking, as well as lots of gadgets to help you open up more of the world around you. Along the way, you'll piece together the history of what happened to the world of Xel. In classic Zelda style, there will also be an overworld to explore, so you won't just be hopping from dungeon to dungeon.

When is the Xel release date?

You'll have to wait a little while to get your hands on the Zelda-style world of Xel.

Sadly, we don't have a concrete Xel release date just yet. Tiny Roar and Assemble say that Xel will be coming to PC and consoles in 2022, so it looks like we're going to have to wait just a little longer for more information about the game. When it does arrive, you'll be able to play it on PC via Steam, as well as on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S.
