With the launch of backwards compatibility for original Xbox games on the Xbox One, players will be able to experience three generations of gaming on one console. The first wave of supported titles includes Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Ninja Gaiden Black, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Psychonauts, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and more, matching those rumored last week. Thanks to the power of the Xbox One console, the games were able to shine brighter than before with expanded color detail that allows for more vibrant textures and superior shading. Another wave of supported original Xbox titles is expected to hit in Spring 2018, and when the Xbox One X launches in November, certain Xbox 360 titles will receive the same treatment.

On November 7, a select four games will receive enhancements that will make for a superior experience on the new console. The games are Halo 3, Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. While not a large sample of games, they are among the most popular titles of the last generation and support for them on the Xbox One X will likely encourage some players to return to them.

It is worth mentioning that while original Xbox titles may be returning thanks to backward compatibility efforts by Microsoft, it does not mean that the games will support online multiplayer. Of course, offline multiplayer will still remain fully intact.

Quick Take

In a world where backward compatibility is becoming rarer and rarer, a service like this is only going to become more and more appreciated. While it is a slow process and it's unlikely that every game in the OG Xbox and Xbox 360 library will be brought over for support, it's still a highly appreciated effort by Microsoft to keep big games from the past relevant.
