The Xbox May 2021 Update has arrived, featuring the addition of passthrough audio, improvements to Quick Resume, and more robust parental controls as some of the more interesting new features.

Microsoft has been working quite hard at improving the user experience on the Xbox Series X|S. Its newest flagship console has some beefier hardware and cool new tech compared to its predecessor — and that's before all of the post-launch improvements that have been made. Now, a new batch of changes for this month has made things even better!

What's New with the Xbox May 2021 Update?

There are a bunch of changes and additions (both big and small) in the Xbox May 2021 update and some of the new additions are pretty cool!

Xbox Quick Resume is Better Than Ever

Let's start with Quick Resume. We first heard about this feature more than a year ago; it allows you to effectively put a game to sleep and get it going again pretty quickly. This month's update makes the Quick Resume feature faster and more reliable.

That's not all, though! Not every game is compatible with Quick Resume. Now, a new tag is available to make it easy to see which games can use Quick Resume and which games can't.

Parental Controls for Multiplayer Games Enhanced

Another neat feature of the Xbox Series X|S is a robust set of parental controls to make it easier than ever to manage how your kids play games. A new feature has been added to the Xbox Family Settings app that lets you approve or deny multiplayer gameplay on a per-game basis. For example, you can allow your kid to play Fortnite multiplayer while also preventing them from playing Gears 5 multiplayer.

Passthrough Audio Sounds Like A Great Idea

The final major addition for the month is passthrough audio. Essentially, this lets you bypass the sound engine on the Xbox Series X|S when you're watching a video or listening to music, piping the sound directly to your external sound system. This is a neat feature for audiophiles, for sure!

These are just some of the new additions and improvements in the Xbox May 2021 update; you can read about all of the new features and changes in today's news post.
