The world premiere of Spiritfarer opened with a fun and downright adorable cartoonish design and made a lot of promises as day turned into night. The main character, Stella, talked with neighbors and interacted with the set.

Nicolas Guérin, Creative Director at Thunder Lotus, gave an update via the official PlayStation blog earlier today on the details of the title. In the blog, he notes that players will cook, craft, fish, harvest and mine resources as they make their way through a bevy of insightful challenges on the way to helping other humanlike animals on their way to the other side. Guérin states in the blog that Spiritfarer is his take on creating "a game that matters, an experience that means something and has a purpose."

We discovered that Stella is the ferrymaster for the dead, like Charon on the River Styx. Playing the ferrymaster, you get to build a boat to explore the world. Along the way, you'll care for the various spirits that join your boat as you guide them to their place in the afterlife. The game features a management sim as well as a way to strengthen your relationships with passengers as you perform your duties as the ferrymaster.

Daffodil, Stella's cat, enables two-person play as you trade off the responsibilities and challenges facing your adventure. Guérin notes that Spiritfarer "is a positive game about loss, friendship, empathy, and what is left behind. I sincerely hope it will entertain you, move you, and help you as much as it’s helping me."

Spiritfarer, from Thunder Lotus Games, will be available with the Xbox Game Pass and on the Xbox Store.
