2K's upcoming arcade brawler WWE 2K Battlegrounds has a release date. The WWE 2K spinoff will hit PC, consoles, and Google's Stadia streaming service on September 18th. Earlier this year, 2K announced that no mainline WWE 2K game will launch in 2020, with Battlegrounds serving as its replacement.

What exactly is WWE 2K Battlegrounds?

WWE 2K Battlegrounds will feature over 70 WWE Superstars and Legends at launch, with more on the way via free DLC. Unlike the main WWE 2K series, Battlegrounds is being developed by World War Z and SnowRunner developer Saber Interactive. It'll offer a more immediate and less simulation-style experience than the main series does, resembling more the over-the-top action of 2011's WWE All Stars and featuring a much more cartoony art style. You can check out the new trailer for WWE 2K Battlegrounds here:

Saber Interactive and 2K describe WWE 2K Battlegrounds' gameplay as "explosive excitement in an approachable experience". It'll feature trademark WWE gameplay crossed with arcade-style button inputs and powerups like flaming fists and ice breath. There'll also be a variety of environmental hazards in the game's varied stages including alligators, helicopters, and auto shop cars. WWE 2K Battlegrounds will feature a full campaign featuring 7 newly-created WWE hopefuls on their way to the top. You'll also be able to play online via Exhibition matches, Tournaments, and the new King of the Battleground last-man-standing mode.

Which Superstars are in WWE 2K Battlegrounds?

Superstars included with WWE 2K Battlegrounds include Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, and Becky Lynch, among many other currently-active WWE Superstars. They'll mingle with Legends including The Undertaker, Andre the Giant, Mick Foley's Mankind character, and Sgt. Slaughter, among others. More will also be added after launch via free updates. You'll have to unlock many of the Superstars within WWE 2K Battlegrounds itself. Each character will utilize one of five classes: Powerhouse, Technician, High-Flyer, Brawler, and All-Rounder. You'll also be able to create your own Superstar and give them one of these classes, as well as customizing the arenas in the game.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds launches for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia on September 18th this year. No word yet on whether the game will also be making an appearance on the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. We'll bring you more as we get it.
