Some promotional artwork for the upcoming WWE 2K Battlegrounds

Looks like the rumors of WWE 2K21's demise are true. 2K has announced that it won't be producing an official mainline WWE 2K game this year. Instead, it's working with NBA 2K Playgrounds developer Saber Interactive on a brand new project entitled WWE 2K Battlegrounds.

This news comes via an open letter from 2K addressed to "the WWE gaming community". In the letter, 2K says it won't be releasing a mainline game this year. The studio says it wants to give longtime developer Visual Concepts time and space to create a great game. WWE 2K20 was not well-received, which probably feeds pretty majorly into the lack of a main-series WWE game in 2020. 2K says it's also recruited new executive producer Patrick Gilmore for Visual Concepts. Gilmore is an industry vet who's worked on projects like Killer InstinctMedal of Honor, and the more recent New World from Amazon Studios.

What is WWE 2K Battlegrounds?

Instead of WWE 2K21, you're getting WWE 2K Battlegrounds this year. 2K says that Battlegrounds is a game focusing on "arcade-style action and over-the-top Superstar designs, environments, and moves". The game will focus on pick-up-and-play fun but will also contain depth if you want to get into it. You can check out the trailer for WWE 2K Battlegrounds right here:

It's a pretty short trailer, but it shows off some gameplay that's markedly reminiscent of 2011's WWE All Stars. The wrestling and ringside hazards look suitably ridiculous; at one point, fan favorite wrestler John Cena is shown being thrown into a crocodile's mouth. 2K says it'll share more details about the game in the coming months. It's due out in fall and will presumably hit all the major gaming platforms. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

Are you sad that WWE 2K21 has definitely been shelved? Do you think WWE 2K Battlegrounds looks like a solid game? Let us know in the comments below!
