Wrecking Ball (a.k.a. Hammond), the latest hero joining the cast of Blizzard Entertainment's first-person shooter Overwatch, will be playable on July 24, 2018, according to a tweet from the game's official account.
Overwatch has added three new heroes to the game every year on a fairly regular basis and Wrecking Ball is the latest one to join the ranks of saviors, villains, and other assorted oddities. He was first announced at the tail end of June and placed onto the Public Test Realm for players to play around with. Have a look at his Origin Story video to get a feel for what the little devil is all about:
Story-wise, Wrecking Ball is a hamster that is one of many genetically-engineered experiments that previously resided on Horizon Lunar Colony. He hitched his escape pod to Winston's shuttle as it headed for Earth and crash-landed, eventually making his way to the Australian outback. It was there that Hammond made a name for himself fighting in Junkertown's mech battles, and now the fearsome diminutive warrior and his battle mech will be ready and raring to go in just a few short days.
Wrecking Ball is slotted into the tank class and has abilities perfectly suited for this role. His Quad Cannons primary weapon provides decent offensive power and his battle mech can tuck into a ball for increase maneuverability. Players can launch a grappling claw while in ball mode to slam into enemies or maneuver into a better position. Adaptive shield gives him a shield health bonus depending on how many enemies are nearby, and piledriver allows Hammond to slam his mech into the ground if he's high enough in the air. Finally, his Minefield ultimate deploys a number of proximity mines all around him and makes for a great area-denial tool or a devastating burst attack in a crowd.
