The Witchfire release date window has been revealed by developer The Astronauts -- it's expected to arrive in Early Access in late 2022, but nothing is set in stone.
Witchfire is an upcoming roguelite first-person shooter that promises fast-paced action in a brutal fantasy world. First revealed at The Game Awards 2017, its developers have been quietly building out their game world (and occasionally building prop guns out of duct tape). Now, we finally have our first confirmation of the Witchfire release date window -- albeit with a boatload of caveats.
When is the Witchfire Release Date Window?
The Witchfire release date window is set for Q4 2022. That means that its developer The Astronauts anticipates this game to launch sometime between October 1, 2022-December 31, 2022. That said, its developer cautions that anything can change over the next 9-12 months.
"[The Witchfire release date window is] as solid as game development allows," read a lengthy blog post on the developer's website. "Investors, platform holders, distributors[,] or publishers may change our plans. Another pandemic may change our plans. Or aliens. Or we just may have underestimated the amount of work needed for the EA release. It’s not like it never happened to anybody before *cough*"
"If you wonder why we did not keep on being coy about the release date, then, it’s for two reasons," the blog post continued. "One, we’ve had enough of the whispers claiming this game does not exist, even if they were in jest. Two, even though we do consider the release timeframe reasonable, we wanted to give ourselves that extra motivating kick in the ass."
The blog post mentions that Witchfire will initially launch in Early Access. The devs add that co-op gameplay is a possibility, but there are a lot of game design challenges surrounding that. A multiplayer feature will certainly not launch with its initial Early Access release -- and that's if they decide to make one at all.
Essentially, everything is up in the air; the specific release date, platforms, and every other concrete detail is officially "TBD" outside of the release date window. From what we've seen, though, things are looking good thus far. Let's hope that The Astronauts can keep to their schedule and actually get the game out by the end of the year.
