It appears that The Witcher 3 has been a smashing success. After selling 1.5 million copies through pre-orders alone, CD Projekt Red projected 7 million copies of The Witcher 3 to be sold. That goal seems more realistic now that Marcin Iwiński, co-founder of CD Projekt Red, announced that the game has sold over 4 Million copies as of today, two weeks after the game's launch.

The Witcher series of video games has grown in popularity since it first released in 2007. After the success of The Witcher 2 in 2011, the series occupied a space between being a popular cult series and a mainstream AAA blockbuster. As of now it seems safe to say that The Witcher has officially become a mainstream title that garners AAA status and sales.

Mr. Iwiński announced the milestone in an open letter to their fans, thanking them for purchasing the title and for their feedback. He states that the average score for The Witcher 3 is 90 or higher. Techraptor's own review of the game, which can be found here, falls within this average as well, with our own Andrew Otton referring to the game as "The New Benchmark for RPGs". Iwiński says that the scores that The Witcher 3 received from a multitude of websites and publications is their dream coming true.

The open letter reads as follows:

Dear Gamers,

May 19th was a crucial date for all of us here at CD PROJEKT RED -- we released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, our open world role-playing game that we had been hard at work on for over 3 years. Since day one, you have given us tons of positive feedback and support -- the sheer volume of emails we’ve gotten since launch simply congratulating us for our efforts is both epic and heartwarming, and I wish every developer comes to have such a fantastic community. In terms of media reception, we’re really humbled by the scores the game has received all around the world. With an average of 90+ on every platform, Wild Hunt is our dream coming true.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the four million gamers worldwide who bought The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the first two weeks from launch. Four million RPG fans spending their hard-earned money on our game is a sign that we did something right, and you can be sure that we’ll harness all that positive energy and make the upcoming expansions worthy of the grand adventure that you’re telling us Wild Hunt already is! Until then, keep on enjoying Wild Hunt, do not forget to grab your weekly set of free DLCs, and stay tuned for constant updates and enhancement to the game we are continuously working on.

Dandelion once said to Geralt that the world is changing, the sun is setting, and vodka’s running out -- go, play, and have fun!

All the best,
Marcin Iwiński
Co-founder, CD PROJEKT RED

Now is a time for celebration and congratulations for CD Projekt Red. The success of The Witcher 3 will hopefully lead to expansions of equal quality and hopefully a successful release of Cyberpunk 2077.

Do you own The Witcher 3? If so, how do you like the game? Do you think that the title deserves all the acclaim that it has achieved? How do you feel about CD Projekt Red hitting the 4 million sales milestone? Leave a comment down below and tell us how what you think.
