After over a year and a half of Early Access, We Are The Caretakers, a 3D grand strategy RPG title set in a post-apocalyptic afrofuturist world, is launching on January 6th for PC and Xbox Series X|S. It's inspired by squad building systems such as Ogre Battle, Darkest Dungeon, Black Panther, and XCOM.
Basically, you'll be building a squad and defending endangered creatures around the world via turn-based combat. Beyond that, it seems like We Are the Caretakers is a pretty unique game, as it blends building a squad, RTS gameplay, turn-based JRPG combat, and a narrative together into what should hopefully be a cohesive mix. It's also made by a team that includes IGF nominees and ex-Microsoft and Blizzard developers, which makes this even more interesting.
As you affect the world, you'll discover how others perceive you. Do they fear you, or will they try and support your quest to save endangered animals? It depends on how you balance diplomacy with force as you deal with the difficult and sometimes violent reality of animal conservation.

As you play through the game, you'll be able to recruit, manage, and upgrade your own faction of hundreds of high-tech protectors. You can assemble up to 9 squads, and all of your characters will have diverse traits, abilities, weaknesses, and personalities. There are also over 30 unique job classes, so you'll have plenty to manage as you meet leaders, research technologies, and recruit allies for your headquarters.
Developer and publisher Heart Shaped Games is also donating 10% of its net revenue to the Wildlife Conservation Network's Rhino Recovery Fund, so you can buy the game while also supporting a great cause. After all, who doesn't love rhinos? If this sounds interesting to you, the game is currently available in Steam's Winter Sale at 25% off, or $14.99.
