Compulsion Games' We Happy Few wowed much of the gaming world with a high-profile showing at Microsoft's E3 2016 press conference. We Happy Few entered Early Access July of 2016 and has seen steady updates since then. This is their biggest announcement since, expanding the scope of the game, releasing on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and they have a publisher with Gearbox Publishing. We Happy Few will be releasing on all those platforms April 13, 2018.

The first thing people will notice in this announcement is that We Happy Few is now a $60 game. Much of the announcement is spent justifying that price, and Compulsion Games is promising that We Happy Few will definitely be worth it. To make that true, the scope of the game is being expanded.

The details on what that increase in scope is exactly are scarce, other than We Happy Few just getting bigger. For reference, the announcement says that the game they want to have ready in April will be about two and a half times the size of the game currently in the Life in Technicolour Update they just put out, which will be the last major update for early access and that overhauled quite a few systems in the game. The reason for moving away from more updates in early access is that presently they have to maintain two builds, one with the story mode and one without, and they want to focus more on getting the game done and less on maintaining two separate code bases. In their pursuit of the full retail release, the team has grown to four times the size it was in 2015, the stories for the three characters rewritten, and the game has evolved from being a sandbox experience to more story-driven.

The announcement also talks about We Happy Few's newly announced Season Pass and Compulsion Games' approach to DLC. Basically, they don't have specific plans (at least any they are announcing now) for DLC right now and won't start working on them until the game they want to ship for April is complete. For them DLC is "not 'carving out existing content'; it’s building new content that we wouldn’t have been able to do as part of the main game."

For those who supported We Happy Few in their Kickstarter back in 2015, all will be getting the Season Pass and those that supported the game at the lowest tier, the only one that did not include a copy of the game, will now receive a free digital copy of We Happy Few.
