Blood puddles and bolts.

Gory is a word that can easily be associated with Warhammer, but that doesn't mean it still can't surprise people. With the Warhammer Skulls Showcase over, there are plenty of titles to review and examine further. One of them comes from Focus Indie Series and Auroch Digital with the name Warhammer: Boltgun. As the trailer shows, it aims for nostalgia as well as shock value based on how much gore takes place. It's a retro-style FPS that will task players to face off against swarms of classic Warhammer 40,000 foes with a variety of Space Marine weapons. It's scheduled for release sometime next year for all major platforms including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.

Bolting For The Gun

There are many factions in the Warhammer universe, but the Space Marines are the face of the 40,000 series. These future soldiers are tasked with eliminating chaos and keeping order, which is the goal of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. You play as a Space Marine who has been sent to a dangerous planet full of hostile creatures and servants to the power of Chaos. You start off with the game's namesake, the standard-issue Boltgun. As you progress through the game, you'll collect other iconic weapons from the series to use against bigger hordes and more powerful foes.

Though this is an FPS, it has definitely highlighted the gory nature of the Warhammer universe. Since it takes place in a dark future such violence is to be expected, though the trailer makes an effort to exaggerate every blood splurt and explosion. With this in mind, Boltgun possesses a lot of similarities to another now-retro FPS, Doom. Both games have a Space Marine facing off against demonic forces on their own with an arsenal of destructive weaponry. However, it also shows how this makes for much faster and more visceral gameplay.

Whether this style is meant for nostalgia or to better emphasize the gritty nature of the Warhammer remains to be seen. The fact that remains is that Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun aims to become available to new and old players alike in 2023.
