Warframe, the free-to-play third-person shooter by Digital Extremes, has just celebrated its 4th anniversary and had the all-time highest number of players online according to a press release.
The game recently released the Octavia's Anthem update which introduced the Octavia warframe along with an associated quest, new weapons & equipment, and other changes. Octavia is a new musically-themed frame with a kit to match; for example, the Metronome ability buffs friendly players who perform actions in time with Octavia's music. The associated Octavia's Anthem quest has players investigating the consciousness of Cephalon Suda within the Relay due to concerns about recent erratic behavior on their part. This was followed by a series of Tactical Alert special challenges to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the game.
Following the release of Octavia's Anthem, Warframe had its most-ever concurrent players on Steam - 69,526 people were playing the game concurrently at its peak over the weekend. The increased traffic to the game pushed it into the top three most played games on Steam at the time. Octavia's Anthem was the 20th update released for Warframe since the game was released in 2013.
For those yet to try the game, in Warframe players take on a role of a member of the Tenno, a warrior race that has awoken from a centuries-long cryogenic stasis only to find themselves in the midst of a terrible war. PvE content typically consists of self-contained missions or sets of missions linked together through a narrative via the game's questing system. PvP is centered around "Conclave" matches that include the typical flavors of Deathmatch and Capture the Flag as well as an in-universe sport called Lunaro.
