The HTC Vive has now been publicly available last April and while the majority of its game content comes through Steam, Viveport will be mainly a hub for Virtual Reality experiences and apps. While this is a paid storefront there are also many apps that are free of charge.

Some of the experiences that can be downloaded now are theBlue an underwater immersive experience and Everest VR which allows you to scale the highest mountain in the world from the safety of your home. There will also be timed exclusive releases on the marketplace called Viveport Premieres. These premieres are either new experiences or additional content for currently available apps such as theBlue. Some titles that have made their debut in Premieres include Google Spotlight Stories' Pearl, Lifelique, Stonehenge VR, and The Music Room.

In celebration of the launch of a new storefront a couple of the Vive titles have been marked down to $1 for the first two days. Some of these discounted titles include some of the new Premieres. HTC has also announced that there will be chances for people to earn "unlimited Viveport content" over the next month. There will be chances to earn these prizes by following Viveport on social media, visiting the website, or through the Viveport Community.

Viveport is currently available free to download from Viveport.com.

Quick Take

While the majority of VR content for the Vive are currently available on Steam the idea of Viveport being a place for experiences or apps helps to create a different sandbox that could help people see VR as more that video games. While you can play VR golf, swing around a tree filled paradise, or fire arrows at stick figures in tower defense there is a lot more you can do in VR. Some of these non-game experiences can include spending time in virtual space walking around a museum, learning about the human anatomy, or even traveling to mars, all of which lend the Vive to use as an educational tool.
