The first Valve VR game is expected to arrive later in 2019. Following today's reveal of the Valve Index headset, players may be wondering if and when Valve will be coming out with a game for their platform. As far as we know, three games are on the way — and the first one will hopefully be coming out before the end of the year.
According to UploadVR, the first Valve VR game is being worked on and should be released before the end of 2019. A recent press event for the Valve Index headset showed off the hardware to journalists and influencers, although they didn't have much in the way of homegrown games on display. Sources speaking to UploadVR state that one of the three VR games that Valve is developing in-house may very well be set in the Half-Life universe, although it's unlikely to be the legendary (and meme-worthy) Half-Life 3. You won't have to purchase an Index headset to use it, either; their homegrown VR game should work with multiple compatible headsets.
Of course, this is Valve we're talking about. The notion of Valve Time is a longstanding meme in the gaming community, and our highly-accurate calculations indicate that a game slated to release before the end of this year might actually take 3–18 months longer than that. We'll only really know for certain once we have it in our hands.
While Valve's hush-hush projects weren't on display, the game journos did get to try out Aperture Hand Labs, a sort of minigame set in the Portal universe that demonstrates the technical capabilities of the Index's controllers. That title may release alongside the launch of the Valve Index VR headset, but I would once again point out that Valve hasn't had the best track record when it comes to timeliness.
The first of three dedicated VR titles from Valve will hopefully be launching before the end of 2019. Fingers crossed that they'll actually manage to pull this one off!
