The Valkyria series is making a comeback on the consoles.

An article from Famitsu magazine in Japan revealed today that a new entry in the series, Valkyria: Azure Revolution, is currently in development for a PS4 release. Current reports, mostly based on translations found on the website Gematsu, also revealed that the original Valkyria Chronicles is being remastered, also for the PlayStation 4.

Translations of the article in Famitsu include basic information about Azure Revolution. According to Famitsu, the small country of Jutland is sparking a revolution against the colonization by the Rus Empire, after the Empire discovered the Azure mineral Ragnite to achieve rapid industrial development. Only three characters have been revealed so far. First is Amleth and Ophelia, a military officer and the princess of the Jutland, respectively. The third character is a Valkyria from the Rus Empire named Brynhildr, who "stands before the heroes."

The article also details the battle system found in Azure Revolution. Titled LeGION, It is a real-time battle system that adds simulation elements to the gameplay. Full details are still unknown, but images found in Famitsu  showcase several characters attacking at the same time in a role-playing format, over the series typical Tactical-RPG gameplay.

The article in Famitsu also details an interview with director Takeshi Ozawa and chief producer Youichi Simosato. According to Ozawa, the gameplay is switching to follow more Role-Playing elements, "We wanted to do something new using Valkyria, and one of the things we’re putting in is a real-time system. Initially, we were considering real-time strategy, but we went with an RPG because we think that’s what more users will want to play.”

Ozawa calls it an "RPG with simulation elements" attached, and notes that, "There are parts similar to Valkyria Chronicles, but because it’s largely different on the surface in a good way, we want you to enjoy this game with flat eyes as a new series.”

The Valkyria series was first released in 2008 with Valkyria Chronicles, a tactical role-playing game for the Playstation 3. The game was a critical success, and spawned two sequels, Valkyria Chronicles II and III, both for the Playstation Portable. It had been several years since the last release, but last year Valkyria Chronicles was released on the PC with some upgrades like 60 FPS, surprising Sega with high sales numbersAzure Revolution will be the first Valkyria game for consoles since the original release.

According to the article, Azure Revolution will be released in Japan in December 2016.
