The Valiant has just been announced by THQ Nordic and is a squad-based RTS set in 13th-century Europe and the Middle East. As Theoderich von Akenburg, players will fight against one of their former brothers-in-arms, Ulrich, who has become obsessed with re-uniting Aaron's Rod, an ancient and mysterious relic. Ulrich has led a crusade through Europe and the Holy Land in order to find the missing pieces to the relic, and Theoderic must stop him in order to save the world, despite previously vowing to never take up arms again.
The Valiant is an action RTS with RPG elements designed to bring a fresh experience to those who want something new from the genre. Instead of grand armies, this is a more tactical experience with smaller forces that takes place over a sweeping, story-driven campaign. A similar (and seemingly more complex) title in the genre is Spellforce 3 and its expansions, so if you want something to whet your appetite while you're waiting for The Valiant, you can check that out in the meantime.
While there's no base-building, decisions still have to be made on and off the battlefield, with heroes each receiving three unique skill trees along with skills and equipment. Players will also have to select their forces carefully for each mission, as the wrong choice could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
If you want something else to play besides the campaign, there are two different multiplayer modes as well: cooperative and competitive. Three friends can enjoy the Last Man Standing mode and hold off enemies' waves that include mini-bosses and bosses. Success means new skills and better stats for future challenges, so be sure to win at least once in a while. The PvP mode includes 1v1 or 2v2 scenarios, with victories unlocking visual customization that can be "leveraged throughout the game experience", which sounds vaguely interesting.
The Valiant is "coming soon" and will eventually arrive on PC, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox One.
