Trails fans rejoice! The next installment of the epic saga is set for Western release at last. According to a press announcement released by NIS America, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3 release will be coming exclusively for PlayStation 4 in Fall 2019.

Originally released in Japan in 2017, this follows the PC release of Trails of Cold Steel I and II on PC by XSeed games, both games published in Europe by NIS America. They are scheduled for Western release on the PlayStation 4 in early 2019 after releasing in Japan in early 2018.

The third entry in the saga introduces a new Class VII, led by Rean Schwarzer at the Thor Branch Campus. With faces old and new, they find themselves wrapped up in a plot that could lead to yet another war, or possibly worse. Knowing the Trails series, it's probably worse. For more details, and a sneak peek at the combat, take a look at the announcement trailer below.

NIS America has also announced that certain veterans of the localization team from the previous two entries are also working on the third one, though they have not specified who or in what capacity they are working on it.

Update: According to her updated resume on Twitter, Brittany Avery - Project Coordinator for Trails of Cold Steel I and Lead Editor for Trails of Cold Steel II - is one of the team members who is working on the NIS translation of Trails of Cold Steel III in the capacity of Localization Producer, Freelance Editor and assisting with casting and recording. Ryan Thompson, a translator who worked on the first two games, will also be returning to the team and working on translating and proofing, and editor Kris Knigge will be returning as editor and consultant.

Quick Take

After NIS America and the debacle of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, we’re all a little nervous to see them take on Trails of Cold Steel, which is arguably a much more difficult game to translate. It doesn’t help that they misspelled “Trails” in the hashtag when they made the announcement on Twitter, but I’m cautiously keeping my hopes up. Additionally, I'm also hoping for a future PC release, given that the first two entries in the series are available on Steam.
