Shortest Trip to Earth first hit Steam Early Access on October 9, 2018, and now its full release is around the corner. The developer, Interactive Fate, announced on their Steam blog that Shortest Trip to Earth is leaving Steam Early Access on August 15. For those unfamiliar with the game, the developer describes it as,

"A roguelike spaceship simulator focused on exploration, ship management and tactical battles. The game gives players the story of a space captain travelling home at the backdrop of a raging intergalactic war. Each playable ship starts with armed crew, nuclear missiles and a cat."
The release date announcement was followed by a launch trailer available below. It showcases a mixture of gameplay, cinematic scenes, and what you can expect if you haven't picked it up yet.

  • An optional easier game mode and updated tutorial
  • Multiple game endings for you to discover

Update

The Steam Early Access product page for Shortest Trip to Earth mentions a price increase on launch and that is still in the case according to the publisher. It's unknown what the price will increase to, but it will be known closer to release apparently.

Quick Take

It's always worth celebrating when a Steam Early Access game launches out of the program; because it shows that not all projects are abandoned. As goes with negative news getting more attention than positive news, it's important to appreciate the developers fulfilling their promise. On top of that, Shortest Trip to Earth must be doing something right because it has "very positive" reviews according to Steam.

People and myself included will immediately see FTL vibes from this game and they're not wrong to think it. The idea for Shortest Trip to Earth first started when the developer began designing it in 2010, two years before FTL There's nothing wrong with seeing more great space simulator games.
