Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan was live on stage during last night's Overwatch League broadcast to show off the latest PvE mission for the Overwatch Archives event. Set in the Rialto district of Venice, Italy, we'll be seeing Blackwatch agents going up against Talon operatives in a mission gone awry.
The Overwatch Archives event lets players go back in time to play key missions from the organization's past. Last year's Uprising event saw a team of four fighting against the Omnic extremist group Null Sector in King's Row. This time around, we'll be seeing Genji, McCree, Moira, and Reaper in a mission against the forces of Talon in a PvE mission set in Rialto, the central area of Venice, Italy. This team of four will be operating under the Blackwatch banner, the covert-ops division of the peacekeeping organization that wasn't quite as idealistic as their fellows. Take a look at the video from last night's broadcast to see what's in store:
Mr. Kaplan came on stage wearing a Blackwatch shirt, introduced himself, and showed off the trailer relatively quickly. From what we can gather, whatever mission the Blackwatch team went on didn't go exactly as planned. Talon operatives quickly cut off their escape route, and it's up to you and your friends to get the heck out of there while fighting against some of Talon's toughest fighters. Talon will be fielding snipers, assassins, heavy assaults, and a "bunch of other [units]" in the mission against you. An "All Heroes" mode will also be available, but it will be different compared to the story version of the game mode.
Of course, it wouldn't be an event if we weren't getting cosmetic skins. So far, we know from a previous Developer Update that "our favorite Shimada brother" will be getting a new skin in the upcoming Overwatch Archives event. Reaper will be getting a "Soldier: 24" skin as a nod to his days in the Soldier Enhancement Program that also led to the enhancement of Commander Jack "Soldier: 76" Morrison. The trailer also showed off a Blackwatch skin for Moira in the Retribution trailer, something that had been anticipated by some as she was noted as being part of that organization.
Update: A tweet from the game's official account gives us a closer look at Moira's new skin as compared to her default:
The Rialto map will feature a nighttime setting for the Overwatch Archives mission. The devs are going to be getting a bit more mileage out of the map aside from this event - a daytime version of Rialto will be coming to the PTR in the future as a PvP map. The PvP version of Rialto will be an Escort map where players have to move the payload through multiple checkpoints.
Aside from last night's video, a new comic titled Retribution was released [PDF] that gives players a bit of background on the events surrounding the mission we'll be able to play in-game very soon. Overwatch Archives will be available to play from April 10-30, 2018.
