Update: The original version of this story stated that Rocket League would become an Epic Exclusive based on statements that strongly implied that. Epic Games has since released a statement clarifying that they have not announced plans to stop selling it on Steam.

Modified story below

Earlier today, Rocket League developer Psyonix announced a business transaction with gaming giant Epic Games. Epic expects the final agreement to acquire Psyonix sometime between late May and early June of this year.

The Rocket League website assured players that they can expect the same level of quality in Rocket League's future updates. Psyonix informed players that, in the short term, the game "would not change at all." The company promised the same regular updates with new features and content. Psyonix explained that, in the long term, they would continue to develop the game. They explained that, with their new relationship with Epic, they could then leverage it into growing the game.

Psyonix also addressed the game's Esports community. According to them, the business transaction "significantly increases our potential reach and resources, just like it does for the game itself." They promised the future was "very exciting." Psyonix then reminded community members of the seventh Rocket League Championship Series finals taking place June 21 through the 23.

Is Rocket League Epic Exclusive?

No, it appears Rocket League will not become an epic exclusive. While there are plans by late 2019 for Psyonix to release the game on the Epic Games Store, it appears that won't be as an exclusive.. While initial reports according to The Verge, hinted that Rocket League will no longer be available on Steam. Several hours after the publication of that, and this story, Epic Games released a statement to US Gamer stating that the game will not be an Epic Exclusive. Here is the statement:
"We are continuing to sell Rocket League on Steam, and have not announced plans to stop selling the game there. Rocket League remains available for new purchasers on Steam, and long-term plans will be announced in the future."
While sudden, both companies have worked closely together for years. The North California studios are situated a mere 12 miles apart. Psyonix and Epic have collaborated on numerous projects such as Unreal Tournament. According to Epic, Psyonix was instrumental in the production of several of the company's products. They credited Psyonix with help on titles such as Unreal Tournament 2004, Gears of War, and Mass Effect 3. Psyonix founder and studio director Dave Hagewood released a statement:
“We’ve been working closely with Epic since the early days of Unreal Tournament, and we’ve survived changing tides as partners, so combining forces makes sense in many ways. The potential of what we can learn from each other and accomplish together makes us truly excited for the future.”
