Update: A Blizzard employee told GameSpot that the "Diablo Reign of Terror" merchandise was not a leak of a new game, but rather a name for the product line.

Still, this raises questions. Blizzard has a history of dismissing claims of new games. For example, the now upcoming Switch port for Diablo 3 was fervently denied after they tweeted a Diablo nightlight being "switched" off.

That was in February, but months later they showed off port that the tweet purportedly referenced. And with WoW Classic being released some time soon (which, as Blizzard forums user Phlynch points out would never happen if Blizzard's public stance was any indication) it's hard to say if you can take the company's word as truth. We'll find out soon during BlizzCon 2018 next month.

Original Story: BlizzCon 2018 is shaping up to reveal something Diablo related, and likely not just a Diablo 3 event with a fancy filter slapped on it.

The Blizzard merchandise store has put up several new items with the label "Diablo Reign of Terror." A poster and two t-shirts can be found on the store with that name, with images of Diablo. In Diablo 3 we have a more feminine Lord of Terror, but these items show a Diablo that goes back to the game's roots. In a similar situation, last year's BlizzCon gave pre-mature hints at the theme of the World of Warcraft expansion Battle for Azeroth. Wowhead reported that there would be a Sylvanas statue on the floor that year, indicating the direction the then-unrevealed expansion would take.

I'm not gonna lie... These look pretty sick.

The "Reign of Terror" tagline might sound a little familiar too - in Diablo 3 there was an achievement called "Reign of Terror." Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos also sounds similar but is completely unrelated besides the fact that it was developed by Blizzard.

We know that there are at least two Diablo-related projects in the works. Last month Variety reported that a Diablo TV show would be coming to Netflix - an official reveal would not be out of the norm for this coming BlizzCon. Rumors have also circulated concerning a Diablo mobile game, especially with the acquisition of King by Activision Blizzard.

It's pure speculation at this point, but we know that Diablo will take center stage - on the Blizzard's Mythic Stage, in fact - right after the opening ceremony. On November 2nd, from 3:30 PM to 4:15 PM EDT, we'll likely see for certain what this branding is all about - before Overwatch, Hearthstone or even World of Warcraft.

In other Diablo news, BusinessInsider broke today that Blizzard is "actively working" to have cross-platform support for Diablo 3. The game launches for the Nintendo Switch on November 2nd, 2018, so it would be a good time to announce this feature, along with a new game.

Quick Take

I know Blizzard takes their time with games if the gap between Starcraft and Starcraft 2 (or even Diablo 2 and Diablo 3) are any indication, but I think a new entry is now due. One thing I will say is that the tagline "Reign of Terror" sounds almost like a promotion rather than a game title, and it would seem a little foolish to have the game leak via the Blizzard Store. Also, you'd think if it were a title, they'd put a colon between Diablo and "Reign of Terror," but maybe I'm looking too much into it.
