Update: Niantic has now officially announced the Halloween event via their Pokemon Go blog. As well as the information that was already confirmed we now know that the event will go live today at 1:00 pm PT, all earned candy will be double, and that Giratina will become the new level 5 raid Pokemon. The Special Research task was also confirmed to be a limited time event so it seems if you don't complete it by the end of the event you will lose your chance at a Spiritomb. All of this will continue until November 1st at 1 pm PT.
Original Story: We're now getting closer and closer to Halloween as more stores are stocking jack-o-lanterns and fake witches but for a Pokemon Go player, that means it's almost time for the yearly Halloween event where we get to see more Ghost types and other spooky pokemon. While there hasn't been any official release, known Pokemon Go data miner Chrales has uncovered some of the changes we can expect.
First off for the fashion-focused, the avatar items that will be released include Gengar themed backpack, shirt, and hat, Drifloon hat, Drifblim shirt, Mismagius hat, and a Spiritomb shirt. While fashion might not be on the front of everyone's mind players will likely notice that Drifloon, Drifblim, and Mismagius are all Gen IV Pokemon that aren't currently available. This could mean that while Niantic is rolling out Gen IV we might get new additions as soon as the Halloween event. Current Pokemon that evolve into Gen IV Pokemon have also not rolled out yet, interestingly as Mismagius is the evolved form of Misdreavus this might mean other evolved forms like Dusknoir will also be in the event.
For Research Tasks gathered from Pokestops we know the different criteria to complete but not their rewards yet, they are as follows:
- Catch a number of Poocheyena or Houndoor
- Catch a number of Dark-Type Pokemon
- Catch a number of Ghost-Type Pokemon
- Evolve Duskull or Shuppet
- Transfer a number of Pokemon
The final big news is that there will be a new three-part special research task for players to earn a Spiritomb. Professor Willows text for completing each stage of the special research task was detailed in a tweet from Chrales.

While we don't have the exact requirements yet it seems that it's all going to center around collecting Ghost-Type Pokemon, as well as catching 108 Pokemon. The 108 Pokemon is a reference to Spiritomb's Pokedex entry.

What part of the Halloween event are you most looking forward to? Do you think we'll see more Gen IV evolutions with this event? Are you ready to catch 108 Pokemon!
