UNIQLO, a Japanese casual wear designer, manufacturer, and retailer, has debuted their Super Mario UT collection, which "... celebrates Super Mario Bros' 35th anniversary and features graphic prints of everyone's favourite hero."
This is somewhat difficult to talk about, because it's about shirts. Sure, they have Mario on them and they look OK... but they are shirts. For me, this is more of an "alright, I guess," rather than an "Oh $#!$ yeah, Mario shirts!"
This first shirt is celebrating the 35th anniversary, listing the year of the first Super Mario Bros. game (1985), and the current year (2020). The Mario images on it are based on the classic Super Mario Bros., and the black background fits what you could see in the iconic castle stages of the game.
This shirt is weird, and I don't like it. It looks like what was in vogue in the mid-2000s. I've never liked shirts with a lot of text on them either. "Excuse me, sir, can you stand still for five minutes while I read the letter on your shirt?" Sir, this is a Wendy's.
I like the color of this shirt and the fact that Mario is on its front pocket, but why that? Could you have chosen a worse picture of him? I don't think I could have.
This one is pretty decent looking. It shows Mario through the last 35 years. I wouldn't wear it myself, but I respect it.
OK, this one is pretty cool. The coloring is OK, and the image of the shirt is large and easily readable. Plus, it provides a great leadup for any pipe jokes.
Nintendo appears to be going all out on the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., as this is one of several partnerships recently announced. Levi's is making some Super Mario jeans, although their release is delayed due to current circumstances. Lego also announced a partnership with Nintendo, to make some special Mario sets in a move that one can't help wonder how it didn't happen sooner. Finally, there are rumors and reports of a series of remake of various Super Mario games, especially of the 3D variety coming later this year.
